How to Network When Living in a New City

Whether you’ve relocated for a work project, to visit family or simply to experience life in a new city for a period of time, building a support system in a new locale can be a challenge. Here, we provide some tips for living your best life in a new zip code.
Use Apps to Meet People
There was never a time in history when it has been easier to meet people online. Meetup.com is a great site for joining groups based on your interests in cities around the globe. Whether it’s salsa dancing, hiking or investing, the app lets you connect with other like-minded folks in a few clicks. Think Bumble is just for dating? Think again. Bumble BFF matches you with others in your geographical location looking to meet friends just like you.
Join Clubs and Associations
If there’s a professional association you’re eligible to join, find out if a chapter exists in your city. Also, look for opportunities at work to get involved. And don’t discount fitness and sports clubs: these provide opportunities to bond with other members over shared passions.
Do What You Love
Staying home alone after hours isn’t how you’re going to make connections in a new city. Engage in your interests and at the very least you’ll have fun, even if you don’t end up meeting anyone. Sign up for an evening painting, photography or Zumba class, for example. And be sure to schedule fun touristic activities and outdoor adventures on weekends so that you have something to look forward to.
Go Solo
Going to a movie or trying a new restaurant alone in a new city can be a fantastic way to meet new people. You’ll be more likely to be approached by others looking to connect when you’re flying solo than when you’re already paired up or with a group.

Put Yourself Out There
Don’t discount casual encounters with neighbours. A quick “hello” in the elevator could turn into a life-long friendship down the road. Once you’ve found some folks you connect with, don’t be shy! Invite them out for coffee, and once you get to know them, perhaps even over to your place for a meal.
They say “it’s not where you are, it’s who you’re with,” so go ahead and get social in your new city with the tips above. Still on the hunt for the perfect furnished or unfurnished rental? Head over to Uphaus.ca for a huge selection of luxury rentals in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
